Floor Mat

Friday was a teacher workday and I went in early so I could get out early.
I hour earlier brought me some much needed sewing time.
Well, it would have been great if I would have started working on the sewing pile in my sewing room, but that morning while drinking coffee and scanning some magazines I had picked up at the last quilt show I attended, I saw this rug in a quilting magazine!
I do not know why a rug would be in a quilting magazine but because I needed a rug for my sewing room I was determined to make this.
The pattern called for an 18 inch circle, but I wanted it bigger so I made a 22 inch circle. I had to trace the bottom of my school trash can.
Anyway, since I came home early I made 200 prairie points from scraps and leftover 5inch charm squares since I really did not want to cut into my fabric stash until I was sure that this would come out OK.
Well, I worked from 3pm to 930pm and was finally done. I used 275 prairie points since it was bigger it did require a few more.
I like this.
For some reason , I kept reminiscing that I have seen this in someones house when I was a kid.
I worked on it non stop because I knew that if I put it down, I would not be able to touch it for another week, and the passion may have faded by then. I used fabric that Debbie ( makingquilts blog spot) had sent me from Canada.
Though it was a lot of work, I can just see this is theme colors. Don't you think?
Just added top picture which shows the back of the rug. The pattern called for denim but I used some type of Oxnusburg linen which is quite thick. It is not pretty in the back but as I added the prairie points it did get heavier and heavier.
of course if it gets soiled I will probably hand wash this.
If you want to make one that pattern is in American Patchwork and Quilting Calendar 2000, or just make a 18 inch circle, cut 200-4.5 inch squares for the prairie points or a 22 inch circle with 275 points. I can only assume that the bigger , the more points unless you make the prairie points bigger which actually would be a good idea.
Next time I make one, I will make a tutorial.
Right now I have to make a Poodle skirt for my daughters Halloween party and I hate sewing clothes!

What a cool mat, I too don't see the theme, but maybe that is just the picture?

Oh my gosh Betsy it's beautiful. That's a lot of prairie points. Is there a backing to it? How is it "finished"?
