Scraps
Geez, has anyone noticed the cost of batting and fabric?
It is up to $12.00 a yard here and batting is so expensive that I may have to stick to just creating small projects.
Anyway, this is my basket of Christmas scraps and I am having a blast paper piecing them so I can put together some Christmas runners for my neighbors.
Every year I gift them something I have made and it is so nice to see their homes decorated with items I have made for them.
This paper piecing method is very addictive and time consuming but I like what I am creating.
I do need to tackle my quilting pile.
What are you guys doing with your scraps?

That is a considerable pile of scraps. I haven't even thought about using my Christmas scraps but I will probably try to do some applique or make some little tree ornaments with some sewn together bits. It is nice that you always make your neighbours something.
Right now I am working on a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. Then I am going to start a few others with scraps to dwindle the evergrowing piles down.
I only by batting when it is on sale. It is 30% off right now at JoAnn's or wait another month or so and it will be 50% off again. Also you can print out 40% off ( almost every week) Hobby Lobby coupons from their weekly newsletters and buy your batting that way too. I never pay full price for it. Never.
Making flowers and building houses.
If I can get a 2" squ,. I cut it and save in a carton , a 2" strip likewise, odd shape small bits for tiny hexes
Shamefully, nothing as noble as making gifts. They're in a basket and when I need a little bit of something I dig thru.

That's a great way to use up scraps... they do seem to multiply. I'm working on a "font" calendar which uses large chunks of my tone-on-tone scraps and bits of all the rest. I love looking for just the right scrap for each block... but I swear that for every scrap I use, more just pops up.... go figure.
Cotton prices have risen and so fabric and batting prices have followed that path Sad but true.... *sigh* I try to use coupons when possible, also.
Those are great looking scraps! I am making a mini quilt with some of mine right now. And thinking about some mug-rug type objects for Christmas next year myself. I need to find mugs first so they can match.
I know what you mean about the price of everything. I just don't have the space to save every scrap so I donate them to my friend and her group makes scrap quilts for charity.
A quick little hint, before the prices go up again. I've been using a 50% off coupon to buy batting at Michael's. They carry the Hobbs brand, and with the coupon they are a much better price then JoAnn's. Of course they won't last, so hurry and find a Michael's near you.
Scrap quilts seem like the way to go these days with the cost of fabrics. I love seeing all of the nice work with scraps.
I make little houses and from very small pieces I made crumb blocks.
You are such a sweet neighbor, I just know they love the things you make them. I get my batting at JoAnn's when it goes on sale....
I have also noted the price rise in cotton fabric. I am glad I have a big stash.
Your neighbors are very lucky to have you living close by!
I paper piece with my scraps, too.
I have used some of my plaid scraps for piecing borders on small quilts. And a few pieces for small applique designs.
making lots of little nine patches :)
ah yes fabric here in NJ is also 11 to 12 dollars and the one local store even keeps marking the prices up of the old fabrics. using what I have is becoming more and more my motto...

I LOVE playing and using my scraps....I have some scraps I am using that are so small I think I should call them 'confetti' scraps!!
Jan 4 marked one whole year since I have bought even one thread of fabric....yep, I went a whole year....I am kind of in rebellion of the fabric 'people' raising the price of the fabric....as for the cotton prices this year there is NO reason for the increase in any fabrics this year....I know, we are cotton farmers. There was now reason for the large increase last year on the fabrics either....ok, don't get me started!!!
